American Idol- Are the judges to nice?

Simon Cowell would not be pleased, that’s for sure. American Idol in its 12th season is again making headlines, but this time, it’s not really the ones that they want. Fox’s huge hit is being hit with criticism that the judges are too nice!

Judges Jennifer Lopez, Randy Jackson, and Steven Tyler are being blasted as being to soft on the contestants and doing a lot of back patting and not giving a lot of real feedback. Even Randy Jackson agrees. “I must say Ryan” he said after the judging if the top 13 guys, “we were a little too lenient on some of the boys.”

The judges, who are all nice people and who are experts at the top of their fields, are all being basically, just too nice. The show is in danger of becoming like so many other reality shows are  predictable, overly contrived, and predictable. The word on the street is that the show could possibly go into a tailspin.

The judges seem to have all taken this laid back philosophy of sitting back, watching the contestants sing, and then heaping on an over the top review, where Jennifer Lopez talks about  the “goosies” that the contestants gave her and Randy Jackson then calls them “dog” and if anything tells them that maybe it wasn’t their best performance, but it was all right.

Steven Tyler appears to be almost asleep until someone mentions a girl in a short skirt.Hopefully the show will get back where it started. Maybe not the harsh and sometimes downright mean comments of Simon Cowell but something. It would really be of benefit to the contestants. If they are wavering one week and need some help and direction, it would be nice to have someone who knows what their talking about, like any one of the three judges, to help them out.

Giuliana Rancic Plans to Have a Double Mastectomy

Sad news from the E! network this week as E!News host Giuliana Rancic announced Monday she’s decided to have a double mastectomy. The decision came after undergoing a double lumpectomy for breast cancer. On the ‘Today’ show Giuliana’s husband Bill Rancic stated that the lumpectomies did not remove all of the cancer cells.

Shortly after the announcement her fans were using twitter to express their support for her. Even celebrities like Denise Richards tweeted “@GiulianaRancic @billrancic sending you both lots of prayers and love!!!!”

Giuliana and Bill replied, with Giuliana tweeting: “Thank you for ur love” and “Thank u all!”

Then Bill followed again with: “Thank you for the outpouring of prayers for Giuliana!”

The entrepreneur has been very supportive of his wife since she was first diagnosed with breast cancer during a routine checkup last year. They have been married now for four years, and have had more than their share of martial challenges. Before the cancer was discovered the two were trying to have children, which wasn’t going well either. However it was the baby, who has not yet been conceived, that has likely saved Giuliana’s life. It was during testing her doctor required before doing a procedure, that the cancer was detected.

Giuliana , told People.com she still has her vulnerable moments. “Usually, it’s two in the morning, and I’ll turn around from Bill so I don’t wake him up, and I just cry,” the 37-year-old said. “I sob and think, ‘How did this happen?” She continued, “My breasts have never defined me, and they never will.”

A double mastectomy can greatly reduce the chance of cancer recurrence, but it’s not a guarantee. It can also depend on the type of cancer, whether it’s spread to lymph nodes, and how aggressive it is. Giuliana’s doctors say that there will be less than a 1% chance that the cancer could return.

Guiliana also has the support of a “pink pal”, a friend of hers Lindsay Avner. Lindsay had an elective mastectomy when she was 23 due to being at high risk for developing breast cancer and she is the founder of Be Bright Pink. Be Bright Pink is a group that aids and councels women at high risk for the disease or who are going through a difficult time such as losing a friend or family member to cancer. Lindsey just showed Guiliana her breasts and said this is what a mastectomy looks like. Linsay had had reconstructive surgery and her breasts looked just like regular breasts, with just a few scars. It really helped Giuliana by taking away the fear and mystery of what it all would look like.

Jon Bon Jovi’s Soul Kitchen Helps the Hungry

Rocker Jon Bon Jovi has always been a big support to others who were needing help. He has sung about it in many of his songs with his band Bon Jovi. Now he has found a way to put his words in action.

In New Jersey he and his wife Dorthea have opened a cafe called Soul Kitchen. The idea came from Jon and Dorthea. The concept is easy, it’s designed to give a good home cooked meal to EVERYONE, whether you can pay cash or not. There are no prices on the menu, people give a donation. If you can’t afford the donation, are unable to pay to have a meal out, if someone is hungry and does not want a free meal, they can go to Soul Kitchen and pay by working at the restaurant or volunteering in the community. If you can pay, there is a suggested $10.00 donation. Jon Bon Jovi suggests that the ones who can afford to, leave more, because the person next to you may not be able to pay.    

At Soul kitchen you can’t tell who just came to eat out, and who is truly hungry, and that’s exactly the way it’s supposed to be. It gives many the chance to do something a lot of working families can no longer afford, a chance to eat out.

Bon Jovi and his wife took an old auto body shop and turned it into a restaurant. Their vision is to create community by eating together. Bon Jovi said on the Today show “language barriers separate us, economics separate us, job descriptions sometimes separate us, well what does everyone need to do? Eat.” ” This is a place everyone can come to eat and feel comfortable.” This idea hits very close to home for Jon,  he grew up in New Jersey and still lives near the cafe. He can be found on any given night cruising around in the restaurant talking to the customers, or behind the counter. “This is not a photo op” laughs Bon Jovi, “me in that kitchen, I’m washing dishes, you know that’s what I get to do.”

Jon and Dorthea hope that this idea will be a template that can be replicated in communities around the country. A place that feeds everyone, rich or poor. “If you want to see effective change, come and have a meal,” says Bon Jovi. He wants to not only feed people, but for them to leave “Happy, healthy, you know, body and soul.” The Soul Kitchen  has plenty of volunteers at this point, what’s needed now, they say, is hungry customers who have  an appetite for giving back.

The Clinton Foundation’s 10th Anniversary Concert

“I just love you and your hot wife,” Lady Gaga said, at the Hollywood Bowl stage, just a few feet from Bill Clinton, his wife, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton,  and their daughter, Chelsea. Gaga went on to praise the Clintons by promising that “tonight, I thought we’d all get caught up in a little Bill romance.”

Gaga then went into a performance of “Bad Romance” that left the full house at the Hollywood Bowl in awe. This concert was a celebration of the 10 years that the Clinton Foundation’s has devoted to making our world a better place. The foundation specifically worked to fight disease and poverty at home and abroad.

The concert, “A Decade of Difference,” was a “double Bill”, so to speak, as it was also for former President Clinton’s 65th birthday party. Civic minded entertainers were the highlight of the show, most of which have been involved in one way or another in helping the foundation.

Legends of music like Stevie Wonder, and U2′s Bono and the Edge performed. There were also rising stars from many different genres of music like country music star Kenny Chesney, the Somali singer K’Naan, Colombian rocker Juanes, R&B king Usher, and Lady Gaga. The concert lasted for  four-hours and was received well by the large crowd.

Stevie Wonder started the night with staples like “Superstition” and “Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours),” the latter of which was used as President Obama’s theme song in the 2008 campaign. Laura Ling, who was rescued from a North Korean jail in 2009 by Clinton, gave an introductory speech before Chesney started his acoustic set. Later Clinton thanked Chesney for not making him the only guy onstage with a Southern accent!

There were other highlights of the night as well. A comedic short film about failing ventures of the Clinton Foundation’s “Celebrity Division”, which included Ted Danson and Ben Stiller, got lots of laughs.

Bono and the Edge closed the show with an acoustic set of hits they described as — “you (shelling) out a million quid for a couple Irish buskers.”  Bono has been involved with the foundation since it’s beginning, and is the first to give Clinton praise for how he has helped make the world a better place. U2 is one the most activism-oriented bands in history, and they acknowledged Clinton’s help in healing the North/South trouble in Ireland, and making it more peaceful.
